Video of the Future

Title: Video of the Future
Artists: Lauren Scime and Bryan Hewitt
Date: 2009
Media: Interactive video installation
Special thanks to Patrick Dowell for his programmatic collaboration.

This piece uses motion sensors and a custom-built software application to create an interactive video installation. The result is a randomized narrative structure that is not a loop, but has no definite beginning or end. The advancement of this narrative is dependent on the number of viewers who are watching the piece. As viewers enter the space where the piece is projected, the sensors transmit their entrance to the algorithm inside the software that controls which video clips are played from a library of content contained on a hard drive. In order to watch all of the content, a viewer would need to visit the piece several times with different numbers of people present in the space.

The software is engaged in an ongoing process of making decisions based on the viewers actions. The viewers must learn from the results of those decisions in order to complete their experience of the piece.
